For the last month we have had Jaxon in a learn to skate program at our local rink. He has done great with all of the lessons, and to say the least, surpassed all of our expectations so far.
His first day of lessons, by recommendation, was to start in the lowest available class. (We knew he could skate since Grandma Colorado gave him his own roller blades for his birthday (he uses them at least 4 times a week) and when we went to public skating for the first time a few months back, he just skated away, leaving us to pick up our jaws)...
We started him at the lowest level of classes because (I) wanted to make sure that he got what he needed and not to skip any important steps of his learning...
I can't explain the excitement he was going thru waiting for the day to come. And when it came, OH BOY!!!
We got there early to sign him up and get dressed because you can't get on the ice without all your hockey gear on, duh! This is him waiting to get on the ice. Can you feel the excitement?
The class finally got started. It was him and another little girl about the same age in level 1, snow plow class. They started with some practicing of getting up from your knees ( a very important lesson) because you need to get back up when you fall, right?
Now the fun began!! They finally were ready to hit the ice. The teacher was carrying a bunch of beanie baby's for the kids to pick up on the ice so that they could practice getting up and down on the ice. Good idea I thought, but Jaxon had a whole different approach.
As they entered the ice the teacher told them to make their way to the corner of the rink so they could have some fun. Jaxon stepped on the ice and never looked back. GAME ON!!! He not only made it to the corner, but around to the next and back skating circles and enjoying all of it. From the picture below you can see the head instructor grabbing him. For a second I thought she was going to redirect him back to his teacher and his classmate, but I was wrong..She directed him to level 3, yep..skipping level 1 and 2 with the words of, "oh k, you don't belong there, but over here. Laura and I were excited, happy, proud and laughing at it all. We don't think the couple that had there 2 kids in level 3 appreciated it much, but hey those kids were like 9 or 10, he is only 3 1/2. Ha Ha....
Jaxon's first skating lesson was a hit, that is until it was time to get off the ice. Obviously 30 minutes of ice time isn't enough for Mr. Jaxon. He didn't understand that when it was over, it was over. The class that started after his was going on while we were still dealing with him. As you can see by the next picture, it wasn't good. That's Grandma Lebo in the background watching us try to deal with this hockey fiend of a child.
Needless to say that deals were made to make it earlier to the next one because there is a public skating he can get extra "practice" in and do his "warm up" before class. As well, we made a deal if he didn't cry when he got off next time and didn't cry or throw a fit that ice cream would be given. Hey, when your 3 your negotiation skills need to be sharp!!!
The rest of the month went great and no more feeling were hurt in the process...
