Man, you missed some drama last night at the McGovern house. I have to say it was a good lesson but after an hour of crying and begging, Rich and I both were ready for bedtime. Alicyn went with me to the store on Sunday. I had my list, and I am being a Nazi about not buying things that are not on the list and budgeted for BEFORE leaving the house. So, she didn't even bother asking for anything from the little store located inside the HEB Plus, cause she already knew that if it wasn't on the list, she wasn't getting it. The cashier gives her a buddy buck, she goes to get her prize, and passes by the little store. I am checking out right in front of it, so she asks if she can go inside. I said yes and didn't even have to remind her that she wasn't getting anything. She comes back saying there is this "animal thing that grows hair and you can cut it, its only $5." I told her that she should be sure to bring her money next time we come to the store so she can get it. She has been talking about this thing all week.
Last night, she begged Rich to run her to HEB to get this hair growin' animal. She insists that its $5 so she goes to her birthday stash and gets $7 to take to the store. Not long after they left, I get a call from Rich saying that its not $5 its $15.99 and in Rich's words its "a piece" and not worth that. I told him he could loan her the money but that she would have to pay us back as soon as she got home. He tried and tried to convince her not to buy it saying it was over priced, cheesy, etc and offered to take her to get a Chia Pet from Walgreen's for less money (apparently that's what a hair growin' animal is, a fancy chia pet). But no, she was determined to have this one. It's her money, so Rich allows her to buy it. They get home and Rich tells her to go get her money so she can pay us back. She counts out what she says is all her money and is $4 short of the $17.31 cent animal thing. "you have gone into debt Alicyn, you spent more than you had and now you need to find a way to pay for the difference". She goes back into her room and finds $20 bill that GG & Pop gave her for her birthday, but can't spend that cause Pop died and I should save that forever. (Can't really argue with that one), then she finds the $7 she has from the tooth fairy, she brings it out and while sobbing says, that money is special to me cause the tooth fairy gave it to me and I can't spend it. Then its her piggy bank, "but I worked really hard and saved for 3 years to fill it up, you didn't tell me that I had to spend all my money on this, I don't want to use all my money. " The whole time we are saying, you made the decision to buy it, we told you that it was $17.31 and that it was a lot and you insisted on buying it. So we open up the piggy bank and start taking out the silver coins. We came up with the $4, she takes it to Rich saying here's the money (she is thinking she is getting all the other cash back) We explain that no, she has to pay the cash and the coins in order to have enough. She melts down, completely to the floor meltdown, screaming that she wants to take it back, how could we make her spend all her money, please take me back to HEB. Mind you its 8pm, and we are not going back to HEB tonight. I remind her again, that this is why she should not make rash decisions, she should plan it out and think about her purchases. The little store in HEB may not even take returns but I told her that if she still wanted to take it back, we could TRY, and explained that if they don't take returns, she is stuck with it. She says she is going to sell it to someone if they don't take it back, determined that she is going to get her money back. I am not exaggerating, this went on for over an hour!
Fast forward to today, I ask her what she decided to do with the animal thing on the way home from school, "what animal thing?" I said remember the one that you spent your money on last night, she says "oh, I am keeping it, I will just do some chores". GOODNESS!!!
On another note, Trish got to go home today and is in great spirits! Yay, the month from hell is coming to an end...T minus 3 days, 3 hours.
